CHAPTER TWO: REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.0 Introduction

The transmission system could be defined as a working system that transmits power created by an autombile engine to the various driving wheels of the machine. The tansmission system consist of:

  1. Clutch
  2. The gear box
  3. Propeller shaft
  4. Universal joints
  5. Rear axle
  6. Wheel
  7. Tyres

2.0 Requirements Of Transmission System

  1. Provide means of connection and disconnection of engine with rest of  power train without shock and smoothly. 
  2. Provide a varied leverage between the engine and the drive wheels
  3. Provide means to transfer power in opposite direction
  4. .Enable power transmission at varied angles and varied lengths.
  5. Enable speed reduction between engine and the drive wheels in the ratio of 5:1. 
  6. Enable diversion of power flow at right angles.
  7. Provide means to drive the driving wheels at different speeds when required. 
  8. Bear the effect of torque reaction , driving thrust and braking effort effectively.

3.0 Types of transmission system

There are basically two types of transmission systems: mechnical and hydraulic transmission systems

3.1 Mechanical transmission system

The mechanical transmission system is more physical. It consist of a clutch and multi-funtional gear box system. There are so many gear trains on the mult-ratio gear box; each of the of gear trains gives the a required amount of speed ratio. The power generated moved from one gear to the other. The loco usually stand as the connecting mechnism to the engine while the wheels are joined to the engine via a fixed gear ratio respectively on each gear set. Though the loco speed is significantly dependent on the speed produced by the engine
