CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Integrity and trustworthiness are important concepts in the social sciences, because each is said to enable and enhance cooperation (for example, Maesschalck, 2003; Dobel, 1999; Blau, 1964; Fukuyama, 1995; Zand, 1972; Deutsch, 1973). In the commonly spoken language, but also in some academic literature, both terms are often used as synonyms or as subsets of each other. For example, in the trust literature integrity is often seen as one of several dimensions of trustworthiness (for example, Mayer et al., 1995). In other words, integrity is seen as a subset of trustworthiness. In the integrity literature trustworthiness is often seen as one of a large set of moral values held by an actor (for example, Huberts et al., 2003). In other words, suggesting that trustworthiness is a subset of integrity. This cannot be true at the same time. Hence a closer examination is required to clarify each concept in relation to the other. What are the similarities? What, if any, are the differences? What are the consequences for future research? What can be learned from merging the two bodies of literature? The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, to investigate more precisely what the similarities and differences are of the concepts integrity and trustworthiness and how they relate to one another. And second, to investigate what insights can be gained for the study of integrity from merging the two bodies of literature. We continue with a brief overview of common descriptions and definitions of integrity and trustworthiness, before examining similarities and differences. Then we proceed with giving an overview of what insights can be gained for the study of integrity.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The main aim of the research work is to determine the effect of integrity of ministers on church members. The specific objectives of the study are:

  1. to determine the relationship between the integrity of church ministers and apostolic church members
  2. to determine the extent to which the integrity of church ministers influence the members of apostolic church
  3. to investigate the factors affecting the integrity of church ministers and church members
  4. to recommend ways to improve the integrity of ministers in apostolic church

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study came up with research questions so as to ascertain the above stated objectives of the study. The following research questions guide the objectives of the study:

  1. What is the relationship between the integrity of church ministers and apostolic church members?
  2. To what extent does the integrity of church ministers influence the members of apostolic church?
  3. What are the factors affecting the integrity of church ministers and church members?
  4. What are the ways to improve the integrity of ministers in apostolic church?

1.5 STATEMENT OF THE HYPOTHESIS

H0: there is no significant relationship between the integrity of church ministers and apostolic church members

H1: there is significant relationship between the integrity of church ministers and apostolic church members

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study on the effect of integrity of ministers on church members will be of immense benefit to the entire apostolic church and the members of the church. The study will explore the integrity of church ministers and how to influence the members of the church of apostolic church. The study will serve as a repository of information to other researchers and students that desire to carry out similar research on the above topic. Finally the study will contribute to the body of the existing literature on the effect of integrity of ministers on church members

1.7 SCOPE OF THE STUDY

 The study will cover on the effect of integrity of ministers on church members with focus on the apostolic church.

1.8 LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work
