ABSTRACT

This research was on “the impact of the mass media in crisis resolution in some selected communities within khana local government rivers state. Crisis is a necessary evil, a sine quo non; this was so because in the process to satisfy needs, people and and organizations engage in different activities and as a result crisis emerges. The crisis that emerges poses a lot of problems to the society. The objectives of this research was to investigate the causes of crisis and examine the role of public relations in crisis management in Khana Local Government. This used both primary and secondary sources of data collection. The population of the study was 9,010 and the sample size was 500. Findings revealed that unemployment, land disputes, intolerance and poor application of mass media strategies causes crisis among communities. It is hereby recommended that Government should as a matter of priority make uses of media strategies like public enlightenment campaigns, awareness programmed to emphasis the need for tolerance and discipline among ethnic nationalities, boundaries should be clearly  demarcated with concrete pillars by boundary adjust commission after proper examination.   

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Different situations produce different types of crisis, which leads to real problems in the entire society. Crisis is any occurrence that has a negative implication and if creates tension and uncertainties. Crisis engaged in the universe right from the beginning of man and has remained a reoccurring variable or decimal but not without effects. Man’s interaction with the environment coupled with the sophistication of present age, survival of one fittest involved in many activities with the prime objective satisfy their basic or primary needs (psychological and safely) and secondary needs (social esteem and self-fulfillment).

In the process to achieve the needs, crisis always emerge either between employee and employees and management of an organization, two communities or an organization and a community. on the other hand, organizations and groups strive to win bigger shares of the market as to make profit them its rival, which will result in intensive competition and finally to crisis.

Communities due to interest will engage in crisis. Crisis is a necessary evil with us.

Presently, hardly is there any day without news of crisis from our media whether religious, political or industrial crisis. Of a truth, crisis has been with us for centuries but state of current violent crisis in organization, government, and communities portent great anger and threaten and growth and stability of the mentioned areas and the society in general. This satisfaction requires appropriate measures and structures to manage properly this evil called crisis.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

From the above background, it is obvious that crisis is a negative element that is highly unwelcome. Crisis decelerates growth and brings instability in the policy. It brings about unhealthy competition, destruction of life and property as well as loss of life. These developments are critical as foreign and domestic investors will be skeptical that their huge investments would be safe, fear and insecurity as well as lack of trust and confidence will prevail.

Thus, for continuity of people and development, Khana community guaranteed the need for the impact of mass media in crisis resolution cannot be overemphasized. Hence, the need for extensive investigation into the cause of the crisis and provide adequate information in order to place the community in a better position.

1.3 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The nucleus objective of this research is to investigate how to manage and possibly reduce the frequency and channel crisis to a more productive activity to promote development in the society.

Specifically, the research objective includes:

  1. To trace the causes of crisis
  2. To examine the previous methods that will be employed

iii. To reduce crisis in society

  1. To explain why there have been unsuccessful resolution of crisis.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

The researcher has mapped out vital research questions which need to be answered as follows:

  1. Does the media strategies play a significant role in crisis resolution?
  2. Do high level of unemployment among the youth causes crisis?
  3. Does intolerance among ethnic groups in community discourage foreign direct, investment?
  4. Are public relations experts effectively and regularly used in dispute resolution?

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will benefit many cooperate organizations and government officials and mass media in crisis resolution as few work has been done on the subject. Also, it will serve as a starting point other researcher who will be interested in the subject of this research, it will also be beneficial to communities, mass media and public relations experts as more knowledge has been gained from the research.

1.6 SCOPE/DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The scope of this study covers Khana Communities of Rivers State and specially discusses causes of crisis and the activities or impact of the mass media in crisis resolution. The researcher faced some obstacles in the course of gathering date. Among the barriers are lack of necessary materials on the subject matter, thus few interactive exists. Also, unwillingness of some respondents and government officials of some information was another problem. Finally, the financial constraints made it difficult. For the researcher to reach a wider public all time frame, which, on the other hand, was too short.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

Crisis: This is the stage of disorderliness that engulfed the nation.

Crisis Resolution:   This is the process or step by which this mass media deals with or brings peace into the country when major unpredictable events that threaten to harm the country.

Mass media:    These are means of communication larger, scattered, and heterogeneous audience used in waging war against terrorism.

Resolution: This is media step in bring peace into its country when violence erupts.
