CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Effective disposal of human waste is essential for good health. From a larger perspective, adequate sanitation, together with good hygiene and safer water are fundamental to good health, and to social and economic development (Sanni M., 2015).

Iheke (2010) sees sanitation as the process of keeping places clean and hygienic especially by providing a sewage system and a clean water supply. The lack of safe sanitation systems contributes to the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance by increasing the risk of infectious diseases (Holmes et al., 2016).

According to the World Health Organization, in 2017, 45% of the global population (3.4 billion people) used a safely managed sanitation service and 2.0 billion people still do not have basic sanitation facilities such as toilets or latrines. (WHO, 2019)

Access to safe sanitation systems in homes, schools, work places, public spaces and other institutional settings (such as prisons) – is essential for overall well-being, for example through reducing the risks  (Winter & Barchi, 2016; Jadhav, Weitzman & Smith-Greenaway, 2016) and anxiety caused by embarrassment and shame (Hirve et al, 2015) associated with open defecation or shared sanitation.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

A good sanitation practice is one of the best ways to promote health and prolong lives of residents in Nigeria; however people are still dying from diseases such malaria, typhoid, cholera etc. This might be as a result of poor or types of sanitation practices used by the residents of Nigeria. Lastly, there have been studies on sanitation but most people especially those in the rural areas have not really understand the health implication of sanitation practices; hence a need for this study.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aim of the study is to determine the impact of sanitation and its health implication among residents of Nigeria. The objectives of the study are:

  1. to identify the importance of sanitation practices to the residents of Nigeria
  2. to identify the types of sanitation practices and their effects on the health of the residents of Nigeria
  3. to identify the factors affecting the sanitation practices among the residents of Nigeria
  4. to recommend ways to improve the sanitation practices among the residents of Nigeria

 1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The following research question will guide the objectives of the study:

  1. What is the importance of sanitation practices to the residents of Nigeria?
  2. What are the types of sanitation practices and their effects on the health of the residents of Nigeria?
  3. What are the factors affecting the sanitation practices among the residents of Nigeria?
  4. What are the ways to improve the sanitation practices among the residents of Nigeria?
