CHAPTER ONE

  1. INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

Waste is introduced into the environment due to the day-to-day activities of humans. Waste management refers to the many methods and processes of dealing with waste at every stage from generation and collection through to final disposal.

Waste needs to be managed in order to prevent contact with humans or their immediate environment. Therefore, the main purpose of waste management is to isolate waste from humans and the environment, and consequently, safeguard individual, family and community health. In addition, the aesthetic value of a better outlook and a clean physical environment is important for our emotional wellbeing.

The waste we produce can be categorised as liquid waste or solid waste depending on its physical state. It can also be categorised as hazardous or non-hazardous.

Globally, in most cities especially in developing countries solid waste management has became a challenge. According to the World Report of June (2012) solid waste is a silent problem that is growing daily. Rapid urbanisation and population growth has contributed in straining of social amenities including solid waste management. There is irregular collection of waste from most high density suburbs and this leads to illegal dumping on nearby open spaces.

Babayemi (2009 ) reported that urban centres throughout Africa collect less than half of the solid waste produced and 95 percent of that amount is either indiscriminately thrown away at various dumping sites on the periphery of urban centres, or at a number of so-called temporary sites, typically empty lots scattered throughout the cities. Throughout most of Sub- Saharan Africa solid waste generation exceeds collection capacity (Jibril, Ibrahim, Dodo, Sheelah and Suleiman, 2012; Kaseva, 2005; Henry, 2006) as shown in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Kenya. There is a sharp rise in the amount of garbage generated by urban residents between now and 2025.

Jibril etal (2012) and Ezeah (2010) argue that very few urban areas in the developing world have adequate and sustainable waste disposal systems and litter is a growing problem which has not received much attention in Sub-Saharan Africa (Ezeah, 2010). This gives rise to irregular collection of solid wastes hence the uncollected waste is dumped in unauthorized areas such as open fields, ditches and streets. During raining periods some waste for example plastics are washed away into the drains blocking them and flooding results. Hence the study comparative analysis of waste management practices by foam Production Company, case study of vita, mouka and hara foam.

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLE

Poor waste management has been a major problem to human existence and it affects both rural and urban areas. This could be as a result of lack of awareness on how to manage waste in country. It could also be that there is no expertise to train people on waste management practices. Another problem could be as a result of lack of funds from the government to help promote the waste management practices. Finally, several researches has been carried out on the waste management but not even a single research has been carried out on a comparative analysis of waste management practices by foam production company case study of vita, mouka and hara foam.

1.3   AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

        The main aim of the study is to examine a comparative analysis of waste management practices by foam Production Company. Other specific objectives of the study include;

  1. to determine the factors affecting waste management practices of foam production company.
  2. to determine the effect of waste management practice on foam production company.
  3. to determine the extent to which waste management practice affects foam production company.
  4. to proffer possible solutions to the problems.
    1. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

1      What are the factors affecting waste management practices of foam Production Company?

2      What is the effect of waste management practice on foam Production Company?

3      What is the extent to which waste management practice affects foam Production Company?

4      What are the possible solutions to the problems?

1.5   STATEMENT OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0:   there is no significant difference in waste management practices by mouka foam, vital foam and Hara foam.

H1:    there is significant difference in waste management practices by mouka foam, vital foam and Hara foam.

1.6   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on a comparative analysis of waste management practices will be of immense benefit to the entire foam Production Company in the sense that it will enable them to look out for depreciated foam and see how to make it become new and appreciated, the study will educate them on inviting expertise to train them on how to recycle or to train them on other waste management practices so as to be of great importance to the foam production company. The study will also enable the government to plough in resources in terms of funds for effective waste management practices. Finally, the study will contribute to the body of existing literature and knowledge to this field of study and basis for further research.

1.7   SCOPE OF STUDY

The study on a comparative analysis of waste management practices by foam Production Company is limited to vita, mouka and hara foam.

1.8   LIMITATION OF STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.

1.9   DEFINITION OF TERMS

Waste Management                Waste management is the activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal.
