INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Within recent decades, globalisation has become a commonly used term to describe an integrated world economy. However, despite it becoming a commonly used term world-wide, it continues to be difficult to understand in terms of its precise definition, form, and impact. The concept globalisation tends to be difficult to understand because of its various meanings that depend on various dimensions or aspects of globalisation being addressed. Globalisation tends to be viewed differently by individuals depending on their ideologies or background. However, it is often described as a multidimensional phenomenon with political and cultural dimensions and economic factors playing a key role (Robinson, 2004). A common theme that has emerged from its definition is that it is a political, economic, social and cultural process that deepens the world‘s interconnectedness and interdependence through global capital flow, multinational activity, information technologies and people taking a transnational form (Moghadam, 1999). It (globalisation) operates beyond nation- states boundaries and causes nation-states to lose aspects of their sovereignty to an integrated world economy (Singh, 2004: 9).

Since the 1980s, globalisation has resulted in the world becoming more integrated as has been seen by the rise in capital flows and technology transfers. However, the current wave of globalization has been accompanied by the uneven distribution of resources between developed and developing countries (Lenz, 2002). It (globalisation) has worsened preexisting structural inequalities in developing countries by being driven by neo-liberal policies that focus on unrestricted market forces that maximise profit and efficiency over other values such as social justice (Lenz, 2002). It has therefore, affected nation-states ability to fulfill welfare functions and worsened pre-existing inequalities The various scholars argue that globalization has not had a neutral impact on women and men due to pre-existing conditions biased against women in policy-making institutions. It is estimated that globalisation has increased poverty levels by 82 million, 14 million, and 8 million in sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Central Asia, and Latin America and the Caribbean respectively (Globalization and its impact 2004).
