  1. Background to the Study

According to Federal Ministry of Transportation (2015) analysis, statistics shows that around 15,000 to 20,000 cases are reported annual encounters of vehicle breakdown such as empty gas, flat tire, lockout, engine startup failure and more (MoT, 2015). Therefore, breakdown assistance and servic­ing is a critical service in automotive industry. With today’s traffic conditions, there is an ever-increasing need to provide motorists with travel information and to be able to accurately locate individual vehicles when dealing with incidents. It is often quite difficult for motorists to pinpoint their location when a breakdown or accident occurs.

Nowadays, many android applications are available which provide many smart things to the users. Google’s Android Operating System in Mobile phones are still relatively new, however, Android Operating System has been progressing quite rapidly. Easy access to thousands of applications via the Google Android App Market – where applications or games, through Google’s Playstore can be downloaded applications for free.

With the advent of satellite navigation, mobile telephones and advanced computing, it is now possible to pinpoint motorists and provide telemetric services to assist them. The subject of this project is an integrated system that has been developed by the Automobile Associations across the globe to provide Emergency services to vehicle users (Ali and Alwan, 2015).

  1. Statement of the Problem

So many persons are encountering difficulties getting assistance when their vehicles breakdown on the road. They do not have any car Repair Service Providers’ contact and as such cannot get assistance when there is an eventual breakdown. This become worst when the breakdown happens on rural areas as the breakdown may be far away from the car Repair Service Providers (kim et al, 2015).

More so, considering the growing security challenges and insurgencies in the country, stranded or frustrated drivers and/or their passengers are at the mercy of bandits in the location of their breakdown if help does not come on time and quickly.

These problems are the motivation for the development of this project to help those who are in need when their cars breakdown along the roads.

1.3       Aim of the Research

This project targets to develop an Android-Based Automobile Location Finder  Application that will assist the user get access to the nearest Repair technicians’ location in case of vehicle breakdown by contacting them via the internet, messages and phone calls.

1.4       Objective of the Study

The aim of this project is to develop an android mobile application that will help users locate nearest car breakdown technicians. Specifically, the research is guided by the following objectives:

  1. Review the existing Android-Based Automobile Location Finder Applications.
  2. To create a robust database that will manage both users and technicians information.
  3. To use Google map in determining the location of the technician using augmented reality mechanism.
    1.   To Significance of the Study

The need for a mobile automobile mechanic finder application cannot be overemphasized. Several vehicle owners have found themselves in situations where there is a broken down vehicle with no means of getting an auto mechanic on time. The Successful Implementation of the Proposed Location Finder System will aid in discovering automobile mechanics in area where the vehicles have broken down and also help expose the mechanic to more customers as well, thus leading to an increase in revenue for them.

  1. Scope of the Study

With several electronics out there running on various operating systems like android, Windows, IOS, Apple, etc, this study is aimed at designing an android app that will serve as a communication link between stranded car owners and breakdown repair technicians when the need arises. Hence, the scope is restricted to hand-held devices running on android operating system.

  1. Limitation of the Study

However successful the objective of this study is, it is borne into consideration that communication is a two-way thing. The availability and response time of repair technicians to breakdown cases is outside the context of this project.

This study’s success is dependent fully on network access of any particular location (both for car owners and technicians).

There are scenarios where breakdown occurs at odd hours of the day (say, when everyone is asleep), this study does not guarantee a successful solution in this instance.

More so, the financial implications of developing, even the simplest of mobile application is very enormous, hence, the researcher cannot deploy the app for other mobile operating systems than Android. Time is another factor of great limit.
