CHAPTER ONE

1.0   INTRODUCTION

1.1   BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The emergence of polish technology in engineering is apparent offshoot of complexities resulting from the induction of substances that produce desired gloss and provides a protective coating for the surface of the materials, changing it to a dry adherent film. Therefore, polish is a substances usually wax based, which when applied to a sequence was based, which applied to sequence protects, makes it smooth and shiny.

It has been discovered that shoe polish industries in Nigeria are at minimum even though the polish industry is economically very important due to its widespread usage. Shoe polish industry  as a surface coaling provider in a very important venture.  The manufacture of surface coaling materials of which shoes polish is a part, has been estimated with swales of more than 10,000 million yearly.

This in essence means that its usage is wide spread and in teams of employment, gives a lot of opportunities.  The economic consequences as highlighted above have4 in turn spu7rred many into a continuous struggle for a good quality product.

The primary function of shoe polish is to make the finished leather becomes smooth and glossy by gentle rubbing and also enhancing its performance and durability. (Turner, 1993). Shoe polish is a mixture of paraffin wax with pigment, solvent (white spirit), turpentine oil and nitrocellulose (Oslon, 1980 and (Rattee, 1978). Dyes and perfumes are sometimes added in the formulation (Morgans, 1990).

Shoe polish is applied on leather products to repel other solvents or dust from the film surface and impart elasticity and gloss to the film without destroying the hardness (Guthrie, 1994). This should make the polish remains as discrete solid particles held mechanically within the leather. The shoe polish produced will be applied alongside shoe polish from carbon black (CI black Pigment) on finished black leather. Physical properties such as wrinkle resistance, gloss, rub resistance; resistance to fading and dust absorption were evaluated.

The paste polished is non aqueous and translucent while the emulsion polish is milky in appearance and aqueous. Oil polishes are easy to apply but the polished surface easily attracts dust and finger marks. However, wax polishes are more difficult to apply on the surface and are more reliable in that little or no dust is attracted and no finger marks are shown. Nevertheless, it is better to use wax polish on shoes rather than oil polishes Kirk (2002).

The applications of polish on the surfaces are done with the aid of an applicator. A number of companies that manufactured shoe care products also sell a liquid shoe polish in a squeezable plastic bottle, with a small sponge applicator at the end to decrease its viscosity. Bottled polish usually has very low wax content.

There are many products closely related to shoe polish, but not strictly considered as such, other chemical products may be used to clean and shine shoes, in particular whiteners for white shoes and a variety of sprays and aerosols for cleaning and waterproofing suede shoes. Although shoe polish is primarily intended for leather shoes, some brands specify that they may be used on non porous materials such as vinyl. The polish is generally the same colour as the shoes it will be used upon Shurhabil, M., (2009).

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study on production of black and brown polish came about as a result of inability to produce a high quality polish at a minimum rate due to the limited resources of the production materials of the polish. Finally, most of the research has been carried out black and brown polish but not even a single research has been carried out on production of black and brown polish.

1.3   AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main aim of the study is to examine the production of black and brown polish. Other specific objectives include:

  1. to determine the effect of weather condition of a country on the production of black and brown polish.
  2. to determine the relationship between production of black and brown polish and unemployment.
  3. to determine the factor affecting the production of black and brown polish.
  4. to proffer possible solution to the problems.

1.4   SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study of the production of black and white polish will be of immense benefit to the entire country in the sense that it will help in improving the quality of polishes produced. This will help making the polish industry a viable venture, whose product could be exported thereby serving as a foreign exchange earner for the economy. Finally the study will contribute to the body of existing literature and knowledge in this field of study and provide a basis for further research.

1.5   SCOPE OF STUDY

The study on production of polish is limited to black and brown colours.

1.6   ORGANISATION OF CHAPTERS

The study on production of black and brown polish is divided into different chapters and in each chapters are also divided into segments. Chapter one includes; the introduction, background of the study, statement of the problems, aims and objectives, significance of the study, scope of the study and organization of chapters.
