1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The performance of students has increased in biology since the adoption of improved laboratory equipments in various secondary schools in Nigeria. Before we go into the main discussion lets first of all understand the variable in our discussion; Biology, the study of living things is a science which has developed methods of its own.  The structural complexity of the organisms themselves, the multiplicity of functions occurring simultaneously in organism’s body and the inter-relationship between the organisms and their environment have led to methods of study to this particular science.  Jean Bremner (2000) stated that the methods are characterized by the art of scientific investigation in relation to pupils’ study of new specimen, the experimental approach to biological science in relation to experiment carried out by the individual study.  These are necessary for the effective transfer and permanent communication of biological knowledge.

The level of experience plays a major role in the students’ achievement in biology practical. Students are always advised to attend biology practical. Most students appear a novice in a biology practical examination because of lack of experience and their inability to identify the various specimens involved in the biology practical examination.

Out of all other science subjects, biology happens to be the subject that involves much diagrams compared to others. Diagrams are not words but images; we all know that presentation of images has to do with the number of times one has come across such images. For a student to be successful in biology, such students must always attend biology practical. The constant visit of students to the laboratory and the use of laboratory equipment has a significant impact on the level of achievement of such student; reason being that the student will become use to the both the specimens in the laboratory and the rest of the laboratory equipment.

The above topic is a self explanatory one; one cannot bring in a novice to the specimens in biology practical and expect success from such an individual to be successful in academic environment; one need to work hard, through constant reading, practicing and memorizing what he or she has learnt so far in school.

For a students to achieve success in biology, the students is always advised to always practice with good diagram concerning the topic of study as the word will have it; “practice make perfect”.

1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The variation in the performance of students in biology practical seems more of a constant occurrence because of their inability to participate in biology practical; most students act like novice in the biology practical examination.

Another major problem of this study is the non use of instructional materials in the teaching of biology influenced by lack of creative improvisation of teaching materials on the part of the teachers.  This situation may be one of the factors that cause poor performance of students in biology examinations like the Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations (SSCE).

Thus, this research is designed to investigate the effect of laboratory experience in student’s achievement in biology.

1.3 RESEARCH QUESTION

1. Does the absence of adequately equipped biology laboratories influence learner’s performance in biology?

2. Does a good laboratory have significant effect on the level of experience of student in biology?

3. Does teaching aids create motivation on the parts of the students?

4. Does the use of instructional materials create a good environment by increasing learning rate?

1.4 RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

H0: The level of experience of students in the use of labourtaory equipment and specimens has no significant effect on their achievement in biology

H1: The level of experience of students in the use of labourtaory equipment and specimens has significant effect on their achievement in biology

H0: The use of instructional materials in teaching of biology does not affect student’s success in biology

H1: The use of instructional materials in teaching of biology affects student’s success in biology

1.5 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The aim of the research work is to find out:

1. If the absence of adequately equipped biology laboratories influence learner’s performance in biology.

2. The effect of a good laboratory on student achievement in biology.

3. The impact teaching aids on the motivation of students.

4. Effect of the use of instructional materials on the learning rate of students in biology.

1.6 SIGNIFICANT OF STUDY

The research work is a very important on e as it will discuss the use of instructional materials on the learning rate of students in biology, the students; it will also discuss the effect of teaching aids as motivation to students. It will also reveal the responses of the respondents concerning the topic the effect of laboratory experience in student’s achievement in biology.

1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY

The research work is limited to the study of the effect of laboratory experience in student’s achievement in biology.

1.8 LIMITATION OF STUDY

FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS: The research is left with insufficient funds to move round and buy more materials for the research work but the researcher was able to get meaningful information concerning the research topic.

TIME CONSTRIANTS: The researcher being a students is involved in the other departmental activities like presentation of seminars, and other school assignment is left with limited time to research more on the topic, but the research was able to get meaningful information about the research work and was able to present the research project on the time allocated for the submission of the research work.

1.9 DEFINITION OF RELATED TERMS

BIOLOGY: the study of living organisms, divided into many specialized fields that cover their morphology, physiology, anatomy, behavior, origin, and distribution.

EXPERIENCE: practical contact with and observation of facts or events.
