1.0   INTRODUCTION:

1.1   BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The development of students’ writing in second or foreign language has always occupied the attention of many second language teachers. The reason is that such students always make errors. The occurrence of errors in the writing of L2 students is painful and frustrating to both L2 teachers and students (Reid, 2015; Maniam, 2010).

Efforts are put in by teachers to help their students overcome the errors but it is not a simple task which comes readily to many second language teachers even the experienced ones. Though correcting students’ writing errors has been the preoccupation of many L2 teachers, the situation has not improved as expected.

Language is an interesting phenomenon that has been bestowed on man (Ojetunde, 2013:252). It is a means by which man expresses his ideas and gives meaning to his existence. Babatunde (2011:1) explicates that language is the expression of culture, the depository of culture and crucial mode of culture transmission. In a similar development (Osisanwo, 2012:5) describes language as an instrument of communication among human beings.

In any human society, language performs transactional, interactional and educational functions. Over the years after independence in Nigeria, the English language functions in various societal situations: it functions as language of official communication, language of official business, mass communication, a medium of transmitting knowledge in the field of technology, medicine, law and other professions. It is essentially the language of education and instruction in Nigeria.

These functions are aptly corroborated by Adeyanju (2011) who states that the English language in Nigeria has, for long championed the course of human cooperation by performing effectively all the above mentioned roles.

This study aims at examining English as a Second Language (ESL) learners‟ communicative competence in English at the senior secondary school level. However, the primary objective of conducting this research is to explore the common errors senior Secondary School Two (JSS2) students make in their written essays.

In this study, Error Analysis is used as the analysis framework because it can be used to analyze any type of error students make in their writing irrespective of their source. According to Corder (2011), EA is reserved for the study of erroneous utterances produced by learners of a language. Keshavars (2014) suggested that there are two branches of error analysis: theoretical and applied.

According to Keshavars, theoretical error analysis is concerned with process and strategies of second language learning and the similarities with first language acquisition.

Applied error analysis, on the other hand, deals with organizing remedial courses and devising appropriate materials and teaching strategies based on the findings of theoretical error analysis. Though Error Analysis has some limitations (Dulay, Burt, & Krashen, 2011; James, 2015; Schachter & Celce-Murcia, 2014), it has added a layer to the analysis and classification of L2 learners errors

1.2   STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS

Students face difficulties in the writing component compared to reading, speaking and listening. This is an issue as writing component requires students’ ability and competency in writing in English which will be able to express themselves effectively. So, students from vernacular schools face the problems of mastering their mother tongue and neglecting the acquiring of English language. This could be as a result of incompetency on the part of teachers. It could also be that teachers no longer avail themselves for further training on the changes in the language since English language tends to be dynamic. Finally, several research has been carried out on the error analysis of the written English essays of junior secondary school two students in Owerri North but not even a single research has been carried out on the error analysis of tenses composition writing in senior secondary school in Mikang local government Plateau state.
