INTRODUCTION

  1. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Music plays a significant role in human social life around the world, and there is a growing understanding that music can be an important influence on health and well-being (Scottish Music and Health). Historically from ancient era to modern time, it has been shown that desirable sound of music has a wide range of psychological and physiological beneficial health effects among diverse population in different conditions (Murrock and Higgins, 2009; Trappe ,2009 ) as it specifically is one of activities that involves using the whole brain that is intrinsic to all cultures and has surprising benefits not only for learning strategy, improving memory and focusing attention, but also for physical coordination and performance (Gantenbein ,2009; US health, 2009).

The psychological and physiological beneficial health effects among diverse population in different conditions of music come from one’s high or low affinity for music. For the purpose of the study we will focus on music affinity and counseling self-efficacy in a learning environment. From the year 1997 onwards, the application of the fulltime counsellor for student has been implementing in all secondary school in Nigeria. Even thought the counselling practice is still new in Nigeria, the acceptances from the society are positive in the implementation toward the school counselling (Othman Mohamed, 2006).

Learning environment is regarding to the school buildings and also the classes in the school. Tableman (2004) Learning environment characterizes the organization at the school building and classroom level. It refers to the “feel” of a school and can vary from school to school within the same district. While an individual school can develop a climate independently of the larger organization, changes in school culture at the district level can positively or adversely affect learning environment at the building level. Meanwhile, according to Johns and Stevens (2005), learning environment can be defined as the environment around the school or learning environment for a school.

Depending on the study, learning environment might be called school environment or school-level learning environment In addition, Marshall (2002), also state, characters for a school building physical structures such as schools and interaction between teachers and students are the factors that affect and can help to define the concept of learning environment. Characteristics of schools, such as the physical structure of a school building and the interactions between students and teachers, are two diverse factors that both affect and help to define the broad concept of learning environment. Additionally, learning environment can significantly impact educational environments, as Freiberg (1998) notes, “learning environment can be a positive influence on the health of the learning environment or a significant barrier to learning”. Adapted from Bandura’s (2006, 2007) general social cognitive theory, self-efficacy is belief in one’s capacity to succeed at task. Generally self-efficacy is belief in one’s general capacity to handle tasks. Specific self-efficacy refers to beliefs about one’s ability to perform specific tasks. (Larson & Daniels, 2008). Counsellor (or counselling) self-efficacy refers to counsellors’ beliefs about their ability to perform particular role-related behaviours. These beliefs have been operational zed in a variety of ways, especially as perceived capabilities to enact defined skills and routine session management tasks (which may be termed task or content self-efficacy) or to negotiate more challenging clinical scenarios (coping efficacy). Self-efficacy has been found to be a significant predictor of superior performance.

  1. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Music affinity and learning environment influence counseling self-efficacy. Everybody have his/her choices for music genre. Some have high affinity for blues, some hip-hop, R and B etc; and this have significant effect on the bahavioural pattern of the individual. The problem pose by music affinity could be seen in the difficulties experienced by counselors in improving students/trainees self-efficacy. People that have high affinity for blues tend to become more emotional than those with high affinity for hip-hop. This becomes a problem in counseling self-efficacy during training whether in work place and school environment. Lastly there have been series of studies on counseling self-efficacy but even a single research has been carried out on the influence of music affinity and learning environment on counseling self-efficacy of pre-practical trainee in Adeyemi College of education. Ondo, Ondo State; hence a need for the study.

1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The main aim of the research work is to determine the influence of music affinity and learning environment on counseling self-efficacy of pre-practical trainee in Adeyemi College of education. Ondo, Ondo State. The specific objectives of the study are:

  4. to investigate the factors affecting music affinity, learning environment and counseling self-efficacy of pre-practical trainee in Adeyemi College of education. Ondo, Ondo State
  5. to proffer solution to  the above problem

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

The study came up with research questions so as to ascertain the above stated objectives of the study. The research questions for the study are:

  1. What is the relationship between music affinity, learning environment and counseling self-efficacy of pre-practical trainee in Adeyemi College of education?
  2. What is the effect of music affinity on counseling self-efficacy of pre-practical trainee in Adeyemi College of education?
