CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY

The construction concepts for good drainage systems have increased overtime in most part of Africa. It is evident that there is high rate of flooding in most part of Africa especially the western part; take Nigeria for instance; most of the rural areas of Nigeria are prone to flooding.

Among all the rural areas in Nigeria with flooding problems, the Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state seems to have this issue as a major challenge to the well being of the society; the flooding problem is regional in the scope and involves several closely connected drainage blocks, drainage mains, estuary, and pumping stations that is necessary to comprehensive drainage planning should be undertaken through a master plan study. With the view towards formulating long-term solutions to the flooding problem, the master plan should come up with a balance or combination of structural and nonstructural measures. The structural ones should include the following: construction of additional drainage channels, improvement of the estuary, and rehabilitation and improvement of existing drainage mains such as rerouting of flows to less stressed lines, compartmentalization of drainage blocks to reduce the problems areas into manageable levels, or possibly redesign or reconstruction of the whole drainage system. The study of drainage system along Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state aims to improve the health of the society, safety and quality of life. It helps to reduce flood in generally affected areas, and reduces the damages caused by flood. In achieving these goals, adequate drainage facilities, a proper place for dumping the garbage, better relocation of the squatters, and a comprehensive study plan for the assessment of this plan is a top priority. The Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state areas suffer from flood in every rainy season, which is mainly attributed to the malfunctioning of the existing drainage system due to the adequate maintenance under these circumstances. The government plans to improve the existing drainage system. The availability of proper equipment is indispensable to accomplish the above objectives in this sense, this projects plays an important as a pilot project providing importance in drainage problem in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state. The project includes the procurement of equipment and transfer of technology required for the operation and implementation. The study shall confirm the maintenance of the pumping station and floodgates to determine if there is a need for the repair and rehabilitation of the pumping station and floodgates equipment.

1.2 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH PROBLEM

What really instigated the study on the analysis of drainage system in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna State was the continuous growth of flooding in this area. Flooding and poor drainage system in this area has affecting the people of Mando of igabi iga of Kaduna State socially and economically.

The health of people living in this area is threatened, due to excess flooding. Another major issue here is negligence by the federal government of Nigeria concerning the issue of flooding in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state. The people in this area identified some problem associated with poor or lack of drainage system as:

  1. The environment is always unfriendly during rainy season
  2. Poor transportation system due to bad road
  3. Loss of houses and properties during rainy season

1.3 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

The main aim of the research work is to carry out an analysis of drainage system in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state. Other specific objectives of the study are:

  1. To examine the relationship between effective drainage system and the rate of flooding in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state
  2. To examine the roles of a good drainage system in the socio economic development in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state
  3. To investigate on the factors affecting the installation of a good drainage system
  4. To examine the effect of poor drainage system on the life of people and properties in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state
  5. To proffer solution to the identified problems

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

The study came up with research questions in order to ascertain the above stated objectives. The specific research questions are stated below as follows:

  1. Is there any relationship between effective drainage system and the rate of flooding in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state?
  2. What are the roles of a good drainage system in the socio economic development in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state?
  3. What are the factors affecting the installation of a good drainage system?
  4. What is t effect of poor drainage system on the life of people and properties in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state?

1.5 STATEMENT OF RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS

Hypothesis

H0:  there is no significant relationship between effective drainage and the rate of flooding in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state.

H1: there is significant relationship between effective drainage and the rate of flooding in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state

1.6 SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY

The study on analysis of drainage system in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state will be of immense benefit to the people of Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state, the federal government of Nigeria and other research students as it will discuss more on the analysis of drainage system in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state, the study will also look into the factors that are affecting the installation of a good drainage system in this area.

1.7 SCOPE OF STUDY

The study on the analysis of drainage system in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state will cover all the areas that need a good drainage system in Mando igabi iga of Kaduna state.

1.8 LIMITATIONS OF STUDY

Financial constraint- Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).

Time constraint- The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work

1.9 DEFINITION OF TERMS

DRAINAGE SYSTEM: drainage systems, also known as river systems, are the patterns formed by the streams, rivers, and lakes in a particular drainage basin. They are governed by the topography of the land, whether a particular region is dominated by hard or soft rocks, and the gradient of the land.

FLOODING: Flooding may occur as an overflow of water from water bodies, such as a river, lake, or ocean, in which the water overtops or breaks levees, resulting in some of that water escaping its usual boundaries, or it may occur due to an accumulation of rainwater on saturated ground in an area flood.
